UKSN Bushcraft Basics: Navigation in the Wilderness

Learn how to read and interpret topographic maps. Familiarise yourself with symbols, contour lines, and key features. Carry a reliable compass and understand how to use it to determine directions, orient the map, and follow a specific bearing.

Identify prominent landmarks in your surroundings such as mountains, rivers, or distinct trees. Use them as reference points to navigate and keep track of your position. Pay attention to changes in the landscape, and update your mental map accordingly.

The position of the sun can provide valuable directional information. Observe the sun's movement throughout the day and note the direction of shadows. In the Northern Hemisphere, the sun generally rises in the east and sets in the west, allowing you to determine approximate directions.

Learn to navigate using natural elements. Pay attention to the growth patterns of trees, moss on rocks (which typically grows on the north side), or the behaviour of animals seeking water sources. These natural indicators can provide hints about direction and the presence of nearby resources.

If you know your starting point and the distance and direction you've traveled, you can estimate your current location using dead reckoning. Keep track of your steps, pace count, and approximate distance traveled to maintain a rough estimate of your position.

While traditional navigation skills are important, carrying a GPS device or a smartphone with a reliable navigation app can serve as a backup. Remember to bring spare batteries or a power bank to ensure your device remains functional.

Always practice your navigation skills in safe and familiar areas before venturing into unfamiliar terrain. It's also advisable to inform someone about your planned route and estimated return time.
